In Memoriam: Robert "Bob" Nelson (1944-2025)
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert "Bob" Nelson, who served as Executive Director, President, and CEO of OIC Philadelphia for over three decades. Bob passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at the age of 81.
Bob's journey with OIC began in 1978, where he quickly distinguished himself as a compassionate counselor and visionary leader. Rising to Executive Director in 1985 and later President and CEO, Bob embodied the mission established by our founder, Reverend Leon Sullivan, to expand educational and economic opportunities for African Americans.
During his remarkable 35-year tenure, Bob launched numerous successful initiatives, including OIC Futures, which helped secure employment for individuals with mental health challenges. His crowning achievement was the creation of the Opportunities Inn, a program that continues to train thousands for careers in the hospitality industry and has been replicated at OIC branches nationwide.
Bob's commitment to service extended beyond OIC walls. A Vietnam War veteran awarded the Bronze Star, a graduate of Central State College and Temple University, and a dedicated community leader, Bob received numerous civic awards including honors from the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, the North Philadelphia Empowerment Zone, and the Multi-Cultural Affairs Congress.
As OIC's ambassador, Bob represented our organization to three U.S. Presidents and traveled internationally to Ethiopia and Tanzania to highlight OIC's global impact. He served on multiple boards dedicated to social and economic change and became a prostate cancer activist following his own battle with the disease.
Bob retired in 2014, coinciding with OIC's 50th anniversary, and his departure was recognized with an official citation from the City of Philadelphia.
He is survived by his son Rob, daughter-in-law Jenny, and grandsons Gabe and Miles.
Bob's legacy lives on in the thousands of lives transformed through his work and in the continued mission of OIC Philadelphia. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and all who knew and loved him.
