PHILADELPHIA – Community College of Philadelphia announced that Board of Trustee member Sheila Ireland was elected to serve as a northeast regional board member for the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT). The election took place during the 2022 ACCT Leadership Congress in New York, New York on Thursday, Oct. 27 and Friday, Oct. 28. Ireland is the president and CEO of Philadelphia Opportunities Industrialization Center, Inc. (OIC) and serves as secretary on the College’s board.
“The College is pleased to learn that Sheila Ireland will represent our region on the ACCT’s board of directors,” said College President Dr. Donald “Guy” Generals. “The ACCT is one of the leading organizations committed to strengthening the capacity and governance of community colleges across the country. She brings her more than two decades of management experience to the board and will surely serve as an asset in identifying solutions to the complex challenges that community colleges face today.”
The ACCT is a non-profit educational organization of governing boards, representing more than 6,500 elected and appointed trustees who govern over 1,200 community, technical, and junior colleges in the United States and beyond.
These community professionals, business officials, public policy leaders, and leading citizens offer their time and talent to serve on the governing boards of this century's most innovative higher education institutions including community, junior, and technical colleges. They make decisions that affect more than 1,200 colleges and over 11 million students annually.
“It's an honor to be elected to and to serve on ACCT 's board, especially at such a critical time for community colleges,” said Ireland. “Community colleges provide the springboard to success in today's job market. I'm hoping my contribution at the board level will help amplify and strength that message.”
With more than 25 years of management experience, Ireland has been responsible for the successful leadership of human resources training, and organizational and workforce development functions, in the nonprofit, health care, consulting, government and public utility fields.
