Philadelphia has no shortage of culinary talent. From the caterer who has been feeding neighborhoods for years, to the home baker whose orders keep growing faster than they can keep up with, to the food truck owner with a loyal following and even bigger dreams, this city is full of food entrepreneurs with passion, creativity, and determination. What many of them need, however, is the right support at the right time to turn their talent into sustainable business growth.
That is the idea behind something exciting currently in development at OIC Philadelphia.
In partnership with Temple University’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC), and with support from JPMorgan Chase, OIC Philadelphia is in the early stages of developing the Food Business Accelerator, a small business accelerator program designed specifically to support food entrepreneurs throughout Philadelphia. The goal is simple: create opportunities for local culinary businesses to grow, thrive, and build long-term success.
Philadelphia’s food entrepreneurs deserve more than just a great recipe, they deserve a real shot at building something lasting.
The Food Business Accelerator is being designed to provide a combination of business education, one-on-one advising, mentorship, and hands-on support tailored specifically for food-based businesses. From understanding licensing and permits to branding, marketing, financial planning, operations, and scaling production, the program aims to equip entrepreneurs with the tools and knowledge needed to move from idea to execution, and from surviving to thriving.
For many entrepreneurs, starting a food business can feel overwhelming. Some may have incredible products but limited business experience. Others may have already launched but struggle with growth, staffing, funding, or creating systems that allow them to expand sustainabl, including graduates of OIC Philadelphia's Culinary Arts Training Program looking to take their skills into business ownership. The Food Business Accelerator is intended to meet entrepreneurs where they are and help bridge those gaps with practical guidance and real-world support.
Programs like this matter because food businesses are more than businesses. They are community staples. They create jobs, preserve culture, bring people together, and contribute to the unique identity of Philadelphia’s neighborhoods. When local food entrepreneurs succeed, entire communities benefit.
At OIC Philadelphia, workforce development has always been about more than employment. It is about creating pathways to economic mobility, entrepreneurship, and long-term opportunity.
