Krystal Perea's journey, fraught with challenges, ultimately led her to discover her potential through the OIC's SOAR program. With a background marked by addiction, homelessness, and incarceration, Krystal’s initial endeavors to reshape her life faced numerous setbacks. The allure of the wrong crowd during her earlier years steered her into a tumultuous cycle of substance abuse and misplaced priorities.
When she initially enrolled at CCP, her hopes of furthering her education were thwarted by the realities of homelessness. However, Krystal's resilience and determination shone through as she actively sought to overcome her challenges. An integral part of her transformation was her decision to become a participant in the SOAR program at OIC.
The SOAR program not only offered her a chance to rebuild but also recognized her innate leadership qualities. As she engaged with the program, Krystal's commitment and zeal led her to assume the role of an Ambassador, further solidifying her place as an emblem of change and growth within the community.
One of Krystal’s standout initiatives has been "Salon Talks," a workshop she developed specifically for the young women in the SOAR program. Her efforts have significantly enhanced the program's impact, proving her value and contribution to be immeasurable.
Reflecting on her journey, Krystal shares, “A second chance for me means taking matters into my own hands, perfecting my skills, and mastering the crafts I’m learning along the way.” With aspirations to earn an Associate's Degree and advocate for youth facing adversity, Krystal embodies the very essence of Carl Bard's words: “Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.” Through OIC's SOAR program, Krystal is indeed crafting a brand new ending for herself, while inspiring many others along the way.
