When OIC of America's board of directors gathered for their annual retreat, the most powerful presentation didn't come from a slide deck — it came from the next generation of chefs.
OIC Philadelphia had the distinct honor of hosting OIC of America's national board of directors for their annual retreat. Our doors opened not just as an event space, but as a living demonstration of everything we stand for. And at the heart of the day — quite literally serving it — were the participants of our Culinary Arts program.
From breakfast through lunch, our future chefs designed, prepared, and presented every meal for the board. More than a catering arrangement, it was a moment of convergence: the people who shape OIC's national direction sat down to be nourished by the very people that direction is meant to serve.
OIC Philadelphia's three foundational pillars — social justice, economic empowerment, and workforce development — aren't abstract values. They are commitments that show up in real time, in real rooms, with real people. Last week's retreat was proof of exactly that.
One of the most meaningful parts of the day came when each culinary participant had the opportunity to step forward and introduce themselves to the board. Name by name, story by story, the board met the people behind the plates.
For many of our participants, this was a rare opportunity: to be seen not as a statistic or a beneficiary, but as a skilled professional with something to offer. For the board, it was an unfiltered view of OIC Philadelphia's impact — not in a report, but in a handshake, a smile, and a beautifully plated dish.
This is what workforce development looks like when it's working. It's confidence. It's readiness. It's a young person standing tall in front of national leadership and owning the room.
Social justice isn't only fought in courtrooms and legislatures. It is also practiced in the everyday act of opening doors that have historically been closed — doors to professional spaces, to networks of influence, to the simple experience of being taken seriously.
By hosting the retreat in our space and centering our participants in the experience, OIC Philadelphia made a deliberate statement: the communities we serve belong at every table, including the ones where decisions are made.
Economic empowerment, too, is built in moments like these. When a board member learns a student's name, when a culinary participant earns real praise for real work, when someone who once doubted their path now serves a four-course meal with precision and pride — that is the economy of dignity being built, one interaction at a time.
The OIC of America board came to Philadelphia to plan the future of the organization. They left having seen that future — standing in front of them, apron-clad, articulate, and accomplished.
OIC Philadelphia's Culinary Arts program continues to prepare participants not just for jobs, but for careers, leadership, and ownership in Philadelphia's thriving food economy. Events like this retreat remind us why that work is urgent, why it is necessary, and why it is working.
