At OIC Philadelphia, education extends far beyond the classroom. While our Culinary Arts participants spend countless hours mastering knife skills, perfecting recipes, and learning the business of hospitality, some of the most impactful lessons happen when they step outside the kitchen and into rooms where possibilities come to life.
Recently, four of our Culinary Arts participants had the extraordinary opportunity to join the Real World Leaders (RWL) Podcast, a mentorship program created and hosted by Herb Cohen. The podcast connects underserved students with accomplished business leaders through authentic, one-on-one conversations designed to build career confidence, meaningful relationships, and professional networks. Rather than simply listening to a guest speaker, our participants became part of the conversation, asking thoughtful questions and gaining firsthand insight from leaders who have built remarkable careers.
For this episode, our participants sat down with Larry Stuardi, Founding Partner of MRA Group, one of the Mid-Atlantic region's leading real estate development, advisory, and property services firms. Larry has spent decades leading transformative redevelopment projects across healthcare, life sciences, higher education, and technology campuses. During the conversation, he shared not only the story behind his professional success but also the lessons, challenges, and experiences that shaped his leadership journey.
For our participants, however, Larry's greatest lesson wasn't about buildings—it was about believing in yourself.
Throughout the conversation, Larry openly shared the challenges, setbacks, and defining moments that shaped his career. Rather than speaking from a podium, he engaged our students in genuine dialogue, encouraging them to dream bigger than their current circumstances. Many of our Culinary Arts participants aspire to become entrepreneurs, restaurant owners, caterers, and food innovators. Hearing directly from a leader who built an organization from vision to reality provided a tangible example of what can happen when passion meets opportunity. More importantly, it reinforced a message we strive to instill every day at OIC Philadelphia: your background should never determine your future.
Exposure changes perspectives. It introduces new possibilities, expands confidence, and helps individuals begin to see themselves in spaces they may have never imagined occupying. That belief has been central to OIC Philadelphia since our founding by Rev. Dr. Leon H. Sullivan—to open doors, remove barriers, and create pathways to economic mobility through education, workforce development, and meaningful relationships. Today, OIC continues that mission by connecting participants to experiences that inspire growth beyond technical training.
This partnership with Real World Leaders also represents something even bigger: the power of storytelling.
Every participant who walked into that recording studio carried a story worth sharing. Stories of resilience. Stories of determination. Stories of hope. Those stories deserve a platform, and that's exactly what OIC Philadelphia is building through OIC Studios.
