A Legacy Without Borders: OIC Philadelphia Welcomes OIC Cameroon

More than 60 years ago, Rev. Dr. Leon H. Sullivan founded OIC Philadelphia with a vision rooted in opportunity, economic empowerment, and the belief that people deserved access to the tools needed to transform their lives. What began in North Philadelphia would eventually grow into a movement reaching communities far beyond the city—and across the globe.

Recently, OIC Philadelphia had the honor of welcoming Jude Eze Okafor, OIC Buea Liaison from Cameroon, and his team for a special visit to our North Broad Street headquarters.

Together, leaders exchanged perspectives on workforce development, leadership, community impact, and the programs creating economic opportunities in Philadelphia and Cameroon. The conversation also explored the importance of continued partnership, collaboration, and knowledge sharing across the global OIC network.

That spirit of partnership is already part of our relationship. During OIC Philadelphia’s 60th Anniversary Gala in 2024, more than $10,000 was raised to support Cameroon OIC’s new building fund, demonstrating our commitment to supporting the growth and sustainability of our African affiliates. It was a meaningful reflection of Rev. Sullivan’s belief in collective economic empowerment and the strength that comes from investing in one another.

The visit was a powerful reminder that Rev. Sullivan’s legacy has never been confined by geography. His commitment to creating pathways to economic independence became a global movement, demonstrating how an idea born in Philadelphia could inspire generations of leaders and communities thousands of miles away.

Today, that legacy continues to grow.

As OIC Philadelphia looks toward the future, connections with organizations like OIC Cameroon remind us of the strength of the OIC network and the responsibility we share to continue building upon Rev. Sullivan’s vision.

The roots were planted in Philadelphia, but the impact continues to reach the world.
